- The results of a statewide inventory of California's hardwood resources are presented. This is the first comprehensive inventory with tree and stand measurements ever conducted in the extensive oak woodlands. - The yield-table projection method for modeling the development of regional timber inventories is outlined, and its application to softwood timber types in the Southern United States is described. Problems of simulating forest management practices and natural succession are discussed. A computer model that projects softwood timber inventories using yield-table projection and stand regeneration using a Markovian probability structure is presented. - Pruning of coast Douglas-fir was evaluated; recent product recovery information for pruned and unpruned logs for both sawn and peeled products was used. Dimensions of pruned and unpruned trees were simulated with the Douglas-fir stand simulator (DFSIM). - This report presents an assessment of macronutrients and their distribution within highly stocked, stagnant stands of mixed conifers on the Quilcene Ranger District, Olympic National Forest, northwest Washington. These stands consisted of predominantly three species: western hemlock (Tsuga heterophylla (Raf.) Sarg.), coast Douglas-fir (Pseudotsuga menziesii (Mirb.) - Provisional seed zones and breeding zones were developed for sugar pine (Pinus lambertiana Dougl.) in southwestern Oregon. Zones are based on a map of genetic variation patterns obtained by evaluating genotypes of trees from 142 locations in the region. - No significant increases in annual water yield were shown for three small watersheds in northeastern Oregon after shelterwood cutting (30-percent canopy removal, 50-percent basal area removal) and clearcutting. Average maximum air temperature increased after harvest and average minimum air temperature decreased by up to 2.6 °C. Both maximum and minimum water temperatures decreased slightly in two streams as compared with the control stream. Wind passage and velocities increased dramatically with removal of the forest cover. - Estimation equations for height growth and site index were derived from stem-analysis data of Douglas-fir (Pseudotsuga menziesii [Mirb.] Franco var. menziesii) in the highelevation forests of the Cascade Range in Oregon and Washington. Two sets of height-growth and site-index estimation curves and tables produced from previously published equations are presented-one set with U.S. customary units of measure and another set with metric units. - The 20-year growth response from a levels-of-growing-stock study in an even-aged western larch stand in eastern Oregon, first thinned at age 33, showed that trees growing at low stand densities grew more rapidly in diameter than trees in high-density plots. Height growth was relatively uniform among density levels. Both basal-area and total cubic-volume increment increased as stand density increased. - Observations are presented from 4 years of record, 1976 to 1979, on behavior of mule deer (Odocoileus hemionus) in relation to site variables on the Keating Winter Range in northeastern Oregon. Analyses of animal use per unit area showed that the preferential selection of cells was related primarily to static site variables and secondarily to weather. The most regularly selected and strongest predictive variable was distance from the valley bottom, a variable generally associated with elevation. - Effects of P, K, Ca, Mg, S, Co, and Mo fertilizers on growth and foliar nutrients of red alder seedlings potted in Grove, Bunker, and Wishkah forest soils were determined. Growth in Grove soil was stimulated most by P, Ca, and P + Ca + Mg + K + S. Growth in Bunker soil was improved only by P. In Wishkah soil, best growth was obtained when P was used alone; all fertilizer mixtures produced less growth.
