- The forest products industry is one of Tennessee's basic industries; in 1980, for example, it accounted for about 1 of every 12 basic jobs. Furthermore, Tennessee was one of the majority of Southern States in which the forest products industry improved its competitive position during the 1970's. - PRUNE-SIM is a spreadsheet template (program) that allows users to simulate a financial analysis of pruning coast Douglas-fir (Pseudotsuga menziesii (Mirb.) Franco var. menziesii). The program estimates the increase in product value resulting from pruning the butt 17-foot log. Product recovery information is based on actual mill experience with pruned and unpruned logs for both sawn and peeled products. - A timber resource inventory of the Porcupine inventory unit, Alaska, was conducted in 1977 and 1978. Statistics on forest area, timber volumes, and annual growth and mortality from this inventory are presented. Timberland area is estimated at 1,453 thousand acres, and net growing stock volume, mostly softwood, is 530,505 thousand cubic feet. - The invertebrate communities ofeight Oregon streams were sampled seasonally from 1974 to 1976. Benthic, drift, and two types of aerial-trap samples were collected. Occurrence and percentage composition are summarized by sample type, season, and geographic area (coastal, Cascade, central, and eastern Oregon). Within 276 families, 426 taxa were identified; the 20 families most prevalent within each sample type accounted for the majority of organisms collected (77.8-91.8 percent). - Initial stand statistics for the levels-of-growing-stock study installations were projected by the Douglas-fir stand simulation program (DFSIM) over the available periods of observation. Estimates were compared with observed volume and basal area growth, diameter change, and mortality.
