- Three-dimensional contour surfaces were drawn for physiologically active radiation (PAR) and air and soil temperatures from measurements taken at a high-elevation site (1450 m) near the crest of the Cascade Range in central Washington. Measurements in a clearcut were compared with measurements from an adjacent uncut stand. - Ground plots examined between 1965 and 1975 were recoded to reflect current ownership of forest resources in southeast Alaska. Of 6.3 million acres of timberland in southeast Alaska, 5.6 million acres are federally "owned," 200,000 acres are owned by the State, 409,000 acres are owned by private corporations, and the remaining 59,000 acres are owned by various "other" owners. Figures for State and private corporation owners reflect increases, the federally "owned" amount represents a decrease, and the "other" owner figure shows essentially no change.AuthorsWillem W.S. - Rooting and shoot growth characteristics of 10-, 15-, and 20-year-old Sitka spruce cuttings were studied. Twigs from three branch orders were tested with or without 5000 parts per million indole-3-butyric acid (IBA) hormone treatment. Rooting success averaged 64 percent. The effect of ortet age on rooting success was not significant. Cuttings from first-order branch positions rooted slightly better than cuttings from second- and third-order positions. - Repeated growing-season frosts during late April and early May 1985 caused extensive damage to red alder (Alnus rubra Bong.) seedlings in a newly planted research trial in western Washington. About two-thirds of the seedlings were severely damaged (entire stem damaged or necrotic). Such damage varied by family, from 50 percent of seedlings in the least affected family to nearly 90 percent of seedlings in the most sensitive family. - Twelve fungus species were isolated from three shrubs—Arctostaphylos patula, Ceanothus velutinus, and Castanopsis chrysophylla—in ponderosa pine stands in central Oregon. Hormonema dematioides was most frequently isolated and was recovered from all three shrubs. Penicillium frequentans was most frequently isolated from the single shrub, Arctostaphylos patula, at all but one location. Three potential plant pathogens, Alternaria alternata, Drechslera sp., and Truncatella angustata, should be further investigated as possible biological control agents.AuthorsRalph H. - A sample of 58 logs was used to evaluate five methods of making scale deduc-tions for pecky rot in incense-cedar (Libocedrus decurrens Torr.) logs. Bias and ac-curacy were computed for three Scribner and two cubic scaling methods. The lumber yield of sound incense-cedar logs, as measured in a product recovery study, was used as the basis for comparison. - A 43-year-old, even-aged stand of advance reproduction of grand fir and Shasta red fir in central Oregon responded to release and thinning with diameter and height growth two to three times the prerelease rate. The response began the first growing season after the overstory was killed with 2,4-D. Diameter growth during the second and third 5-year periods after release increased significantly over that of the first 5 years. - PLANS, a software package for integrated timber-harvest planning, uses digital terrain models to provide the topographic data needed to fit harvest and transportation designs to specific terrain. MAP, an integral program in the PLANS package, is used to construct the digital terrain models required by PLANS. MAP establishes digital terrain models using digitizer-traced contour lines from topographic maps, which are, in turn, processed into an elevation grid and stored in matrix form. - Even though Texas consumes more forest products than it produces, its forest products industry has a conspicuous record. Between 1970 and 1980, employment in the forest products industry increased by 12,000. Only one Southern State, North Carolina, showed a larger absolute gain. Texas was also second to North Carolina in improving its comparative advantage during the 1970's. - White spruce trees and tops were chipped and placed in a pile near Fairbanks, Alaska, in February 1983. The pile was 6 meters in diameter and 6 meters high in a cylindrical shape. Thermocouples were placed at 25 locations within the pile so that temperatures could be tracked over time. Gypsum blocks were placed at 10 locations to determine changes in moisture content. The first evidence that the pile was generating heat appeared at the end of May 1983. This heat accelerated the warming and thawing of the pile.
