- This paper presents 15-year results of one installation of a west-wide study of growing-stock levels in even-aged ponderosa pine. Growth was related to growing-stock level in a 65-year-old pole stand on an above average site. Periodic growth is presented for 10 years after the initial thinning and for 5 years after a second thinning to six assigned growing-stock levels.Annual growth in diameter during the 5 years after initial thinning ranged from an average of about 0.28 inch at the lowest growing-stock level to 0.10 at the highest. - Baseline data from 1978 are presented on precipitation, streamflow, and chemical and biological water quality in a subarctic, taiga watershed. - Timber resource statistics from a 1973-76 inventory are presented for private timberland in western Oregon. Inventories usually classify private owners as either forest industry or nonindustrial private. For this report, however, the nonindustrial private classification has been further disaggregated into farmer, individual, and corporate owners. - A total of 363 western hemlock (Tsuga heterophylla (Raf.) Sarg.) logs from Alaska were sawn to compare recovery at a stud mill and at a dimension mill. Recovery at both mills varied by log diameters and by log scaling system. Lumber grade recovery was primarily in Stud grade at the stud mill and in Standard and Construction grade at the dimension mill. Lumber volume recovery is based on long log Scribner scale and on cubic scale. - A boom-type tree shaker was used in a Douglas-fir seed orchard to remove cones from 7- to 9-meter tall grafted Douglas-fir trees. An average of 55 percent of the cones were removed by shaking, while damage inflicted to the upper crown was confined primarily to branch and leader breakage in the top three internodes. Damage to the lower bole, where the shaker head attached to the tree, occurred only once. Shaking a significantly greater proportion of cones from 7- to 9-m tall Douglas-fir trees without drastically increasing top damage is not likely.
