This report summarizes a 1971 timber resource inventory of the Sitka unit in southeast Alaska. Estimates for timberland total 821,700 acres (332 500 ha) with 4.8 billion cubic feet (137.6 million m3) of net growing stock volume. Annual net growth is estimated at -36.8 million cubic feet and mortality at 59.7 million cubic feet (-1.0 and 1.7 million m3, respectively). Detailed tables of forest area, timber volume, growth, and mortality are presented.

One hundred thirty forest stands ranging in age from I month postfire to 200 years were sampled and described by successional series (white spruce and black spruce) and by developmental stage (newly burned, moss-herb, tall shrub-sapling, dense tree, hardwood, and spruce). Patterns of change in the two successional series are described. In addition, 12 mature forest communities are described in quantitative and qualitative terms.

Early in 1979, the School of Agriculture and Land Resources Management of the University of Alaska surveyed forest managers in a number of northern countries to identify topics of circumpolar interest in forest management. Responses most frequently centered on problems of forest regeneration. As a result we initiated what was to be a series of international workshops to address the problem of obtaining adequate and economical forest regeneration at high latitudes. Our initial efforts were financed by a generous grant from the United States Department of Agriculture, U.S. Forest Service.

A survey of shelterwood cuttings in mixed conifer and Douglas-fir (Pseudotsuga menziesii (Mirb.) Franco) forests in the Cascade Range in Washington showed that, on the average, shelterwood units were adequately-stocked with a mixture of advance, natural postharvest, and planted reproduction of a number of species. Shelterwood cuttings in the Douglas-fir type had abundant regeneration, whereas those in the mixed conifer type had generally adequate stocking but fewer seedlings. Bears are frequently encountered by people working in or enjoying the outdoors. Some government agencies have regulations concerning the firearms their personnel carry for protection against bears.Guidelines to prevent hazardous encounters with bears are presented, and the performance of commonly used weapons and ammunition is discussed. The ballistic performance of bullet at the longer ranges generally encountered while hunting. Recommendations are made for weapons and ammunition used as protection from bears.

Losses of trees and tree volume that result from decay initiated by mechanical injuries during stand management activities in the western United States are substantial. They can be reduced through improved logging methods and careful planning of other forest management activities.

Unusable tree and moss residues from land clearing projects in interior Alaska were collected, milled, dried, and densified into fuel logs. Four different combinations of species were tried, and all produced suitable fuels. The feasibility of commercially producing this material into densified fuel in interior Alaska is limited because the fuel logs tend to expand or decompress during winter storage in unheated buildings there.
