- This report summarizes a 1979 timber resource inventory of eight counties in the Puget Sound area of Washington: Island, King, Kitsap, Pierce, San Juan, Skagit, Snohomish, and Whatcom. - A pilot study investigated the impact of two harvesting intensities on duff consumption from prescribed fire. Two units of old-growth Douglas-fir and western hemlock served as the sample. The units, located in the Willamette National Forest, were harvested in 1980 and burned in 1981. Duff consumption was 36 percent less on the unit logged to the closer specification of 6 inches by 6 feet than on the unit logged to the standard specification of 8 inches by 10 feet. - Recent legislation (PL. 93-452; P.L. 94-588) has emphasized improvement of fish and wildlife habitat on lands of the National Forest System. A sequential procedure has been developed for screening potential projects to identify those producing the greatest fishery benefits. The procedure—which includes program planning, project planning, and intensive benefit/cost analysis—has nationwide application for both fish and wildlife projects. - Total aboveground woody biomass of trees on forest land that can produce 1.4 cubic m eters per hectare per year of industrial wood in Alaska is 1.33 billion metric tons green weight. The estimated energy value of the standing woody biomass is 11.9 x 10'5 Btu's. - The water and land-system processes through which timber harvesting affects anadromous fish habitat in western North America are discussed. The effects of timber harvesting on the water balance that regulates streamflow are evaluated, as are direct influences of harvesting on slope stability, erosion, and the introduction of debris in to stream channels.
