- Equations are presented for predicting the volume and value of young-growth red, white, and grand firs. Examples of how to use them are also given. - Lumber grade yields and recovery ratios are shown for a sample of ponderosa pine (Pinus ponderosa Dougl. ex Laws.) in western Montana. About 9 percent of the lumber produced was in Select grades, 48 percent in Shop grades, and 43 percent in Common grades. - Presents recovery of veneer grade and volume from western hemlock from Oregon and Washington. Veneer grade recovery varied by grade and size of logs. - Sediment budgets quantify the transport and storage of soil and sediment in drainage basins or smaller landscape units. Studies of sediment routing deal with the overall movement of soil and sediment through a series of landscape units. - Yield tables generated by the stand simulation program DFSIM (Douglas-Fir SIMulator) are presented for a number of possible management regimes. These include a “normal” yield table; tables for stands planted or precommercially thinned to 300 and 400 trees per acre; tables for commercially thinned stands with and without prior commercial thinning; and tables illustrating the effect of fertilization with nitrogen. - The sagebrush steppe of the Great Basin in southeastern Oregon is peripheral habitat for pronghorns, but the quality of the habitat can be improved through rangeland management. The relationship between pronghorns and their habitat components—the availability of water, type of forage, barriers that restrict the movement of herds, and the effect of grazing by livestock-are discussed. - The current fire behavior system, when properly adjusted, accurately predicts forward rate of spread and flame length of wildfires in black spruce (Picea mariana (Mill.) B.S.P.) forests in Alaska. After fire behavior was observed and quantified, adjustment factors were calculated and assigned to the selected fuel models to correct the outputs to more nearly coincide with observed values. - Multiple regression analyses are used to relate environmental factors and vegetation to postharvest forest regeneration in the Applegate area of southwestern Oregon. - Most cable logging operations use a spar held in place near the landing by a system of guylines and anchors. Safety and economic considerations require that overloads be avoided and that the spar remain stable. This paper presents a procedure and a computer program to estimate the guyline and anchor loads on a particular system configuration by a specific set of operating line tension loads.
