Results are reported for three studies that dealt with the influence of timber sale practices on competition for timber in the timber-dependent communities of Medford and Grant County An Oregon and those surrounding the Nezperce National Forest in Idaho. Investigations of the ecological behavior of fishes often require studies in both natural and artificial stream environments. We describe a large, recirculating stream aquarium and its controls, constructed for ecological studies at the Forestry Sciences Laboratory in Corvallis.

This paper provides estimates of bird density, diversity, and evenness on 13 clearcut units of the Siuslaw National Forest in the Coast Ranges of Oregon, sampled during 1979,1980, and 1981. Total density of nesting birds ranged from 322 to 588 per 40.5 hectares (100 acres); there were 15 to 19 species nesting on each site.

Herbicides, insecticides, fertilizers, and fire retardants are chemicals used to protect or enhance certain forest resources. Baseline data from 1978 are presented on precipitation, streamflow, and chemical and biological water quality in a subarctic, taiga watershed. First-, second-, and third-order streams that drain undisturbed catchments embracing permafrost-underlain and permafrost-free landscapes were monitored; results are being used in analysis of the natural, undisturbed condition of the research watershed.

This statistical report on timber resources of the 4.1-million-acre Wood-Salcha block is the last of four reports on the 14-million-acre Tanana Valley inventory unit. Tables are provided for commercial and operable noncommercial forest land, total gross and net volumes, and annual net growth and mortality. Estimates for commercial forest land total 626,300 acres with 799,374,800 net cubic feet of growing stock volume. Estimates for the special operable noncommercial class total 94,400 acres with 117,812,500 net cubic feet of growing stock volume.

This report for the 3.6-million-acre Upper Tanana block is the third of four on the 14-million-acre Tanana Valley forest inventory unit. Descriptions of area, climate, forest, general resource use, and inventory methodology are presented. Area and volume tables are provided for commercial and operable noncommercial forest lands. Estimates for commercial forest land total 396,200 acres with 528.7 million cubic feet of growing stock volume. Estimates for the operable noncommercial class total 97,400 acres with 131 million net cubic feet of growing stock volume.

Statistics on forest area, total gross and net timber volumes, and annual net growth and mortality are presented for the 1970 timber inventory of the Juneau unit, Alaska. Estimates for commercial forest land area total 1.3 million acres (535 000 ha) with a net growing stock volume of 8.3 billion cubic feet (234 million m3), and annual net growth and mortality of 13.5 and 37.9 million cubic feet (0.4 and 1.1 million m3), respectively.

Timberland area is estimated at 1.38 million acres (557 593 ha), net growing stock volume at 7.56 billion cubic feet (214 million m3), and annual net growth and mortality at -65.24 and 100.26 million cubic feet (-1.85 and 2.84 million m3), respectively.
