- The problem of obtaining adequate and economical forest regeneration is of major concern among the managers of high-latitude forest lands. In 1979 forest researchers and managers from Scandinavia and North America held the first of three workshops to address this topic by sharing experiences and research from each county. The first workshop was held in Umei, Sweden in August 1980. The papers presented during the second workshop are included in this publication. - Chemical properties of ash and mud from the 1980 volcanic eruption of Mount St. Helens and their effect on germination and seedling production of selected plants were studied. The volcanic materials were low in some important nutrients and cation exchange capacity, and they adversely affected seedling production. Catsear, a preferred wildlife browse, and lodgepole pine appear promising for revegetation of some of the areas affected by the volcano; but frequent application of fertilizer will also be required.AuthorsM.A. Radwan, Dan L. - Managers of public recreation areas are concerned about increases in vandalism and disregard for regulations and the rights of others by some users. Other than the litter incentive program, none of the approaches for reducing violations have been evaluated or proved effective. The present study evaluated a program to increase involvement of campers in the management of depreciative behavior by reporting violations they witness. Results suggest that users who witness littering will help, by reporting infractions to authorities, dealing with the litterer, or picking up the litter.AuthorsHarriet H. - Water chemistry samples have been taken from streamflow since 1976 and precipitation since 1978 in Indian River, an undisturbed watershed on Chichagof Island in Southeast Alaska. Volume weighted concentrations of total nitrogen, ammonium nitrogen, nitrate nitrogen, total phosphorus, orthophosphate, sulfate sulfur, chloride, bicarbonate, silica, calcium, magnesium, sodium, and potassium were used with precipitation and streamflow volumes to calculate annual input and output of elements. - A new method has been developed for collecting, sorting, and interpreting gravel quality. Samples are collected with a tri-tube freeze-core device and dry-sorted by using sieves based on the Wentworth scale. An index to the quality of gravel is obtained by dividing geometric mean particle size by the sorting coefficient (a measure of the distribution of grain sizes) of a sample. - Nitrogen and phosphorus were applied to young Douglas-fir (Pseudotsuga menziesii (Mirb.) Franco) trees to determine their effects on deer browsing and tree growth. Nitrogen (N) proauced measurable responses in browsing of terminal shoots and growth of trees the first year, but effects were mostly negligible 2 years after treatments. No responses to phosphorus (P) were detected. Nitrogen and N+P treatments increased the concentration of N in tree foliage the first year, but amount of moisture, ash, calcium, and P were not affected after 2 years.AuthorsGlenn L.
