- A 90-cm-diameter culvert with off-set baffles was set at a 10-percent gradient in an artificial stream channel on Admiralty Island, Alaska. Coho salmon, Dolly Varden char, and cutthroat trout, all less than 120-mm fork length, were able to move up the 9-m culvert. - Understory plants in closed 70-year-old even-aged Douglas-fir stands in north central Washington were destructively sampled to determine the relationship of ground cover and height to dry weight. Weight of plant material can be estimated from the product of plant height and percentage of ground cover on 50- x 100-centimeter (cm) quadrats. - Red alder seeds were collected from six locations throughout the natural range of the species. - The tops of ponderosa pine (Pinus ponderosa) trees were blown off with dynamite to create nest sites for cavity-nesting wildlife. The procedure included drilling a hole almost through the trunk, inserting the dynamite, and setting the charge with primacord and fuse. Trees were simultaneously innoculated with a decay organism. - Heat units were accumulated during the spring and early summer for five seasons to relate degree-days to tussock moth and host tree phenology. - The occurrence of permafrost in stream valleys of central Alaska causes problems with conventional stream-gauging installations. To minimize both thermal and physical disturbance at measurement sites, pre-fabricated Parshall flumes have been used to monitor streamflow at sites underlain with permafrost in a subarctic research watershed.
