- Seasonal growth of tops and roots and concomitant trends in food reserves were observed biweekly on Peudotsuga menzisii (Mirb.) Franco seedlings of two seed sources growing in a Pacific Northwest forest nursery. A general pattern of alternating root, diameter, and shoot growth was found. Rapid root growth did not coincide with rapid shoot elongation, but preceded and followed it. - The forest resources of this country must be protected from wildfire. Protection does not eliminate fire but does reduce loss from fire. In recent years, more acres have been burned on the unprotected 3 percent of forest land than on the 97 percent under organized fire protection. Protection from fire has saved more than 100 million acres per year. - Aerial color photography has shown promise for evaluating understory vegetation as a forest-fire fuel. Mapping understory vegetation from special aerial photography produced results reasonably similar to those obtained by an independent ground check. Differences in the methods used in the exploratory work prevented strict comparability, but agreement was close enough to suggest that further study would be fruitful. - This report presents current estimates of annual disease impact on forest productivity of Oregon and Washington. It is concerned exclusively with losses of timber volumes and of potential timber growth in today's forests. Annual loss from disease in this region is estimated at 3,133 million board feet or 403 million cubic feet. This is about 13 percent of the total annual growth including the mean periodic growth ~ of seedlings and saplings.' - The 1966 Oregon timber harvest totaled 8.9 billion board feet, 5 percent less than the harvest in 1965. During 1966, the total public timber harvest declined 10 percent to 4.8 billion board feet. The uncut volume of public timber under contract at the end of 1966 was 7.6 billion board feet, up 1.3 billion board feet from 1965's year end total. National Forest timber cut during 1966 declined 512 million board feet and the cut from State lands declined 70 million board feet, down 14 percent and 27 percent, respectively. - A study was established in 1952 near Boundary Creek in the Panther Creek area on the Wind River experimental Forest near Carson, Wash. Site index averages 140, and aspect is westerly at elevations around 2,000 to 2,400 feet. Two minor drainages traverse the study area from east to west, creating various northwesterly and southwesterly aspects. The almost pure Douglas-fir stand was fairly well stocked before thinning, averaging 86 percent of normal basal area, although individual plot percentages ranged from 62 to 100.AuthorsRichard L. - Tetramethylenedisulphotetramine (tetramine) is an extremely toxic chemicaI (Hagen 1950).' Shortly after its discovery in Germany (Hecht and Henecka 1949L it was introduced in the United States and found useful as an experimental seed protectant in reforestation by direct seeding (Spencer 1954). - Oregon maintained its high level of timber harvest in 1965 with an output of 9.4 billion board feet. This was the first time since 1926 that production remained unchanged in 2 consecutive years. The harvest from private lands remained stable at 4 billion feet, or 43 percent of the total. Forest industry's cut declined 2 percent (83 million board feet) from 1964, whereas other private landowners increased their cut by 17 percent (103 million feet). - A sawmill, built in 1872, marked the beginning of the forest industry in eastern Washington -- almost half a century after the emergence of the lumber industry in western Washington. Since then, this industry has increased in importance to eastern Washington's economy, now furnishing about one-fifth of the total manufacturing employment and wages paidin some counties and many communities, it is the major source of employment and wages. - Washington's timber harvest increased for the fourth consecutive year in 1965 to 6.5 billion board feet. This 4-percent increase was not as great as the 15 percent experienced in 1964.
