- The fourth inventory of the timber resources of the Olympic Peninsula shows a total of 3,105,000 acres of commercial forest land and 81,464 million board feet (International 114-inch scale) of sawtimber volume. - Greenhouse-grown Douglas-fir (Pseudotsuga menziesii [Mirb.] Franco) graft unions were examined between 2 and 84 days after grafting. Room temperature was maintained at 60-70 F throughout the growing season. In most respects grafts of Douglas-fir followed development patterns previously reported for spruce and pine grafts, but specific differences were noted in contributing cell types, time of formation, and mode of healing. - Washington's 1968 timber harvest of 6.97 billion board feet was the largest since 1929 when a record 7.38 billion board feet was produced. Private harvests increased 16.5 percent in western Washington and 15.7 percent in eastern Washington for an average increase of 16.5 percent, 45.5 million board feet above the private harvest in 1967. - Oregon's 1968 timber harvest of 9.74 billion board feet was the largest since 1952, when a record 9.80 billion board feet was produced. Public agencies' harvests increased 25.0 percent in western Oregon and 4.1 percent in eastern Oregon for a total increase of 19.1 percent, 864.9 million board feet above the public harvest in 1967. - During the first 4 years following application, addition of 200 to 600 pounds of nitrogen per acre increased height increment 62 percent and d.b.h. increment 79 to 160 percent. Gross basal area increment was greater with heavier fertilizer applications, but severe snowbreakage wa also increased. Thus, net production tended to be greatest with the addition of 200 pounds of nitrogen. Indications are that heavier application rates will have a longer lasting beneficial effect.AuthorsDonald L. - Decomposition of thinning slash deposited on the soil surface should have no direct adverse effect on the soil nitrogen available to higher plants in the pumice soil region. Decomposition of roots of cut trees would immobilize nitrogen in the soil immediately adjacent to the root during the decomposition period, which appears to be short for the smaller roots.
