- Clear cutting is the standard harvesting system in old-growth Douglas-fir (Pseudotsuga menziesii) forests in the Pacific Northwest. Usually these clear cuts are in "staggered settings" of 15 to 80 acres with the surrounding stand left uncut to provide seed and serve as a firebreak. However, satisfactory natural regeneration of Douglas-fir does not always develop on such cuttings. The erratic and infrequent occurrence of abundant Douglas-fir seed crops and high surface soil temperatures appear to be major deterrents in many areas. - This publication summarizes the results of the second forest inventory of Chelan and Douglas Counties, Washington. The collection of field data outside the National Forest was initiated in Chelan County in 1959, in Douglas County in 1960, and completed in both counties in 1960. - This is the third in a series of reports on experimental fumigation of the European pine shoot moth in residential areas and nurseries. Methods and techniques derived in previous studies on single ornamentals were adapted to fumigation of a commercial nursery. An elongate cubical chamber was built for treatment of trees in rows. Fumigation of an entire commercial nursery is feasible under conditions existing in the Puget Sound area of Washington during late fall and winter. - Log production in Oregon for 1962 reached 8.5 billion board feet, the highest since 1959, with 41 percent of it coming from forest industry-owned lands. - The value of lumber produced from each of 362 Shasta red fir logs of southern Oregon was determined through a cooperative study in 1960. Lumber grade yield from each log provided the basis for calculating the comparative value of each log grade-log diameter class, in accordance with grading and scaling practices used both east and west of the Cascade Range. The results, which are summarized graphically in figure 1, should be useful to sellers, buyers, and processors of Shasta red fir logs. - Grass, seeded on a steep roadcut in western Oregon, reduced erosion but caused increased surface runoff during a 3-year period of observation. These results were obtained at H. J. Andrews Experimental Forest from a study designed to measure effectiveness of grass in controlling soil erosion from exposed roadbanks.
