- Decay developing in decked western hemlock (Tsuga heterophylla) has caused considerable loss in pulp yields in the Pacific Northwest. The Oregon Pulp and Paper Co., which commonly decks hemlock logs through one summer and occasionally through two summers, cooperated with the Pacific Northwest Forest and Range Experiment Station in a study to determine (1) how much decay and pulp yield loss would develop during 1 and 2 years of storage and (2) whether the amount of such decay and loss could be decreased by continuous sprinkling with water during the dry summer months.AuthorsErnest Wright, A.C. - Sugar pine, the preferred species to grow on many forest areas in southwestern Oregon, is often seeded or planted on clearcuts there. Advance growth in the form of seedlings, saplings, and poles is common in the mixed- conifer type, and costly planting can be eliminated if this advance growth can be saved during logging and slash disposal. - During 1955-56 an inventory was made of forested land in the Middle Fork Working Circle of the Malheur National Forest to provide information necessary for calculation of the allowable cut and for other management purposes. The growth and mortality estimates in the following report were obtained from this inventory. - As an ever-increasing number of young Douglas-fir stands in the Pacific Northwest come under intensive management, development of better tree-marking techniques based on sound scientific principles becomes essential. - Results from annual surveys of the destructive Phytophthora root disease of Port-Orford-cedar (Chamaecyparis lawsoniana (A. Murr.) Parl.) show that the disease is gradually spreading and intensifying within the natural range of Port-Orford-cedar. The disease became established on native trees in the early 1950's in the vicinity of Coos Bay, Oreg., and during its initial buildup invaded most of the low-lying area between Tenmile Lake and Port Orford. - This report presents the results of a study to determine the degradeloss in volume and gradeof coast-type Douglas-fir lumber when kiln-dried and surfaced in accordance with commercial practice. - Severity of the 1959 fire season varied from well below normal in western Washington to a record-setting high in southwestern Oregon. The season was characterized by well-distributed, short rainy periods separated by comparatively short dry spells that frequently included days of high fire danger. July was the only month with markedly above-normal temperatures, and April and October were the only months with predominantly below-normal rainfall. - A series of screening tests were established during 1955 to determine the effects of six commercial and experimental herbicides on brush in southwestern Oregon. The herbicides were tested as foliage sprays on 13 of the most abundant species and varieties of brush on forest lands in this area.
