- Public and private agencies are cooperating in a study of eight thinning regimes in young Douglas-fir stands. Regimes differ in the amount of basal area allowed to accrue in growing stock at each successive thinning. All regimes start with a common level-of-growing-stock which is established by a conditioning thinning. Thinning interval is controlled by height growth of crop trees, and a single type of thinning is prescribed. - Chips from Alaska hemlock and spruce trees blown down more than 10 years produced usable grades of viscose pulp. Yields of pulp from both species were about 2 percent lower for blowdown material than for control trees. - A 43-year-old, even-aged stand of advance reproduction of grand fir and Shasta red fir in central Oregon responded to release and thinning with diameter and height growth two to three times the prerelease rate. The response began immediately after the overstory was killed with 2,4-D. Diameter growth during the second 5 years after release increased significantly over that of the first 5 years. Differences in spacing had no effect on growth. Increased growth after release suggests that saving advance true fir reproduction is desirable under certain conditions.AuthorsKenneth W. - This report summarizes a 1971 timber resource inventory of the Sitka unit in southeast Alaska. Estimates for timberland total 821,700 acres (332 500 ha) with 4.8 billion cubic feet (137.6 million m3) of net growing stock volume. Annual net growth is estimated at -36.8 million cubic feet and mortality at 59.7 million cubic feet (-1.0 and 1.7 million m3, respectively). - One hundred thirty forest stands ranging in age from I month postfire to 200 years were sampled and described by successional series (white spruce and black spruce) and by developmental stage (newly burned, moss-herb, tall shrub-sapling, dense tree, hardwood, and spruce). - Early in 1979, the School of Agriculture and Land Resources Management of the University of Alaska surveyed forest managers in a number of northern countries to identify topics of circumpolar interest in forest management. Responses most frequently centered on problems of forest regeneration. As a result we initiated what was to be a series of international workshops to address the problem of obtaining adequate and economical forest regeneration at high latitudes.
